Texas surgeons working in Ukraine to ease “in-the-mirror” reminders of war

A team of North Texas surgeons, including Dallas oculoplastic specialist Dr. Jorge Corona, recently traveled to Ukraine to perform life-changing facial reconstruction surgeries for soldiers and civilians wounded in the ongoing war. Despite frequent bomb shelter interruptions, the team remained committed to restoring not just faces, but dignity and hope.

One Ukrainian soldier’s face was rebuilt using a patient-specific titanium implant manufactured by MedCAD. The company worked closely with the surgical team, designing custom surgical kits based on CT scans sent from Ukraine to ensure efficient, high-precision procedures.

“It’s incredible to see how this will be in their lives forever,” said Dr. Corona. “By restoring their faces, we feel that we are restoring their humanity.”
